ACTINIARIA is the scientific name for sea anemones - delicate and floral, nonetheless predatory. Self-taught artist Susan Roston interprets her intimate relationship to water – a link between water as elements and as landscape, as sustenance and instigator – into abstract ceramic sculptures that mimic life.
Susan Roston's sculptures contrast between tall, graceful pillars and the countless tentacles of a crawling organism. Yet, despite the apparent simplicity, Roston’s sculptures conceal a mischievous interpretation of her medium, where underwater life takes on sensual, suggestive forms.
Despite the tendencies to look at form as physical, instead of the sublime and the spiritual, the possibilities that exist underneath the surface dwell within us as well. ACTINIARIA reflects how movement, water and fragility within a solid form can translate into life at its most basic level.
