Entranceway detail of the Citadel of Aleppo, Syria.

The usage of the Citadel hill dates back to at least the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, and was subsequently occupied by many civilizations, such as the Greeks, Byzantines, Ayyubids and Mamluks. Most of the construction remaining today is thought to date back to the Ayyubid period.
