GuerillaLIVE #37: Illustrated Worlds

Guerilla magazine and studio sixty six team up for a double-header launch event this Friday
A relatively new art gallery and an almost ten-year-old cultural publication will be sharing some territory this Friday, September 27 with the “Illustrated Worlds” group exhibition vernissage at studio sixty six (66 Muriel Street). The event doubles as GuerillaLIVE #39, featuring the release of Guerilla magazine #39 online and in print.
Guerilla magazine editor Tony Martins served as guest curator for “Illustrated Worlds” and relished the opportunity to challenge some of his favourite illustrative visual artists in Ottawa.
“Usually when I see illustration that I like, I want more of it,” wrote Martins in his curatorial statement to be published Friday in Guerilla magazine #37. “I see a rendered animal or human figure next to, say, a Cadillac, and I want an entire world to spring up around them. From this selfish desire came the exhibition ‘Illustrated Worlds’.”
When asked to curate a show for studio sixty six by the gallery director Carrie Colton, Martins immediately thought of large-scale illustrative works, partly because they are difficult to come by in Ottawa.
“Many illustrators prefer to work on small surfaces and with relatively shallow depth in composition,” Martins explains. “Sometimes I see this as lazy. Sometimes I see this as a limiting of the imaginative power brought to bear.”
Colton’s gallery has made an immediate impact on the Ottawa fine arts scene, partly because the emphasis is on carefully curated shows put together by her and a range of established names from the local art scene.
“Collaborating with people like Tony and Guerilla magazine is very much on-mission for studio sixty six,” said Colton, “where we want to get our name out there with high-quality shows that are friendly to both curators and Ottawa’s wide range of talented artists.”
“Illustrated Worlds” will also be featured in the fall 2013 online and print editions of Guerilla magazine. Included artists (bios below) are:
Juan Carlos Noria
Friday’s double-header will also feature:
- The launch of Guerilla magazine #37 online and in print
- Live performance by vocalist/accordionist Gillian Kirkland (profiled in Guerilla #37)
- A live Polaroid Photobooth with ace shooter Angelina McCormick
- DJ Brendan Murphy spinning ambient tunes
