What Happens When Art and AI Collide?
Laurence Finet’s current series explores the world of artificial intelligence through cyborgs. This series emerges at a time when computers and artificial intelligence are making strides at astonishing speeds. In recent months the advancing intelligence of Chat GPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot programmed to follow given instructions at all costs, has created waves of concerns over the human-like ability to communicate. In response to Laurence’s series and these tech advancements, we decided to try out Chat GPT for ourselves and see what it created when asked to write a review about Meet Me Under the Algorithm.
The following is what was generated.

Chat GPT: Hello! As an artificial intelligence language model, I don't have feelings or emotions like humans do, but I am functioning properly and ready to assist you with any questions or tasks you have. How can I help you today?
Studio Sixty Six: Do you like art?
Chat GPT: As an AI language model, I don't have personal preferences or emotions like humans do. However, I can provide information and answer questions related to art if you have any. Just let me know what you're curious about!
Studio Sixty Six: Could you please write an article about an art show if I give you some details?
Chat GPT: Yes, I can definitely help you write an article about an art show based on the details you provide. Please let me know what information you would like to include in the article, such as the title of the art show, the name of the artists involved, the location, the theme or focus of the show, and any other relevant details. The more information you can provide, the better I can assist you in writing the article.
Studio Sixty Six: Here is the statment that Laurence wrote about her work:
"Meet Me Under the Algorithm explores the universe of cyborg beings. This exhibition invites us to contemplate artificial intelligence, our increasing dependence on technology, and our depleting relationship with nature. In doing so, this series offers an opportunity to reflect on what makes us distinctly human. My paintings are constructed through pigmented layers reminiscent of x-rayed skeletons and flesh. I see my figures as cyborgs discovering a sense of consciousness. Through their senses and new-found sensualities, the cyborgs feel emotions and become aware of themselves and others. In my etchings, I continue to use methods of layering to signify the complexity of a being. I employ etched aluminum plates where shapes deliberately create semi-abstract depictions of figures. My explorations of the senses and organic/inorganic sensualities have led me to think more abstractly about artificial intelligence, specifically algorithms and automation. I wrote a computer programming code for my digital artworks that dictated the formal compositions. This algorithm became a type of artificial intelligence collaborator in my creative process to which I gave agency to compose images freely. At a point in history where humanity is threatened, our connection to what is real and to the natural world is losing its depth. Can artificial intelligence help us solve these challenges? Could cyborg beings develop a moral conscience? Or, by contrast, remind us of the essence of our very own nature?"
Can you write something based on this but include some of your own thoughts on AI in art?

Chat GPT: Of course! Here's an article that includes some of my own thoughts on using AI for creative artistic practice:
Laurence Finet’s "Meet Me Under the Algorithm" exhibition at Studio Sixty Six Art Gallery in Ottawa offers a unique perspective on the relationship between humans and technology. Through her paintings, etchings, and digital artworks, Finet explores the universe of cyborg beings and artificial intelligence, inviting us to reflect on what it means to be human in a world where technology is becoming increasingly pervasive.
One of the most interesting aspects of Finet's exhibition is her use of AI as a collaborator in her creative process. In her digital artworks, Finet wrote a computer programming code that dictated the formal compositions, effectively creating a type of artificial intelligence collaborator. This raises an important question about the role of technology in creative artistic practice. Can AI be used as a tool to enhance artistic expression, or does it threaten to replace human creativity altogether?
While some may argue that AI threatens to replace human creativity, I believe that it has the potential to enhance it in new and exciting ways. By incorporating AI into their creative process, artists like Finet can explore new avenues of expression and push the boundaries of traditional artistic techniques. AI can also be used to automate repetitive or tedious tasks, allowing artists to focus more on the creative aspects of their work.
However, it is important to note that AI should not be seen as a replacement for human creativity. The unique perspective and creativity that humans bring to artistic expression cannot be replicated by machines. Instead, AI should be viewed as a complementary tool that can help artists to expand their creative potential and push the boundaries of what is possible.
Overall, Finet's "Meet Me Under the Algorithm" exhibition offers a thought-provoking exploration of the relationship between humans and technology. Through her use of AI as a collaborator in her creative process, Finet challenges us to reflect on the role of technology in artistic expression and to consider the ways in which it can be used to enhance human creativity. While AI should not be seen as a replacement for human creativity, it has the potential to expand our creative potential and open up new avenues of artistic expression.
