Cindy Mersky, AFCA, SCA
Cindy Mersky is an award-winning artist, born in Edmonton, Alberta. Shehas earned recognition as an Elected Member of the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) and a Signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA). Cindy completed a 4-year program in Visual Communications at the Alberta College of Art and continued her studies at the University of Toronto, where she earned a B.Sc. AAM (Art as Applied to Medicine). Cindy worked in the field of medical communications for 25 years as a medical illustrator, advertising manager and creative director. Ongoing instruction through internationally recognized schools, including the School of Visual Arts in NYC and the Ontario College of Art and Design, have provided additional tools for creative exploration and expression. After moving from Toronto to Vancouver Island in 2010, Cindy started to paint full-time and to work exclusively within the genre of non-objective abstract painting. In 2013, Cindy was awarded an international artist residency at the prestigious Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils, Latvia. Seven of Cindy’s paintings are now in their permanent collection. In 2014, she was awarded another international artist residency in Tbilisi, Georgia. The work Cindy created during that time is in the public collection of the City of Mtskheta, Georgia. She continues to push her own boundaries and is now incorporating décollage and utilizing various non-traditional tools, such a power-sanders, to develop her works.
My paintings explore themes which deal with religion, dreams, transitional periods and faded memories of places or events. What starts out as a field of colour and texture soon becomes eroded into a carnival of scarred remains, leaving only a sense of unreality and the possibility of new beginning. They are documents of change.
I am influenced by the ideas and work of Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, Antoni Tapies and Alberto Burri.
