Ballast Study: Cardboard

Oil on canvas
14 x 18 in. / 36 x 46 cm
Unframed
2014

"Just as a clay brick is consciously made in a size and shape manageable by a human hand (not bigger than a hand can hold and not heavier than a hand can repeatedly lift and place), the crisply divided sections of Ballast, Large Black Pile, and Blue Pile are of a size and shape that I could start and finish in a single sitting.  The images, representing superabundant piles of domestic clutter, are sometimes legible, sometimes confounding.  A new parent at the time I did these works, with the resulting (and inevitable) fragmentation of my time, portioning the paintings into sections determined by time spans was not only true to life but necessary if the work was to be done."
