Beaumont Hamel
The photographer sets up on the side of the monument at Beaumont Hamel. It's good vantage point. Below, people march single file through an old trench, a neatly constructed wooden boardwalk where feet of stinking mud once lay. These soldiers are white-haired, uniformed in light-coloured windbreakers, point-and-shoot cameras at the ready. A woman leans over to her friend. Maybe her parents or grandparents fought here. Or maybe it's almost time for lunch. I would like to ask what brought them here, and whether they can imagine the destruction at the Battle of the Somme, in these fields that now look a bit like a golf course. The photographer is now looking through his viewfinder. He aims just above the white handbag and releases the shutter.
