Artist's Insight:

Common name: Pink Underwing, Latin Species name: Catocala

Collected in Dunrobin, Ontario on August 24, 2003

The Pink Underwing (Catocala concumbens) is one of North America's only underwing moth with pink bands on the hind wings. Most other underwing species have orange, yellow, red, or white bands.

The partially uncoiled proboscis through which the moth feeds is also visible. Adult underwings often feed on fermenting tree sap found oozing from trees.

This moth has a wingspread of 71 mm.
