Mont St. Eloi
Sometimes the mind obliges our need to get away, to travel beyond the painful horizon of a place – even if just for an instant. Paul Fussell describes the pull of the pastoral for young men up to their necks in mud and death. How the jagged silhouette of a barbed wire entanglement could be mistaken by tired eyes for the simple wood fence bordering a family farm. How the wind, when it picked up, made gentle waves on the surface of the foul muck in which they fought. Or how one soldier in a letter to his sister compared men writhing in a shell-hole to a clutch of trout in a creel - the quiet beauty of the image simultaneously transporting us away from, and moving us deeper into, the mayhem of battle and the obliterated landscape.
