Flanders Field
On the flight home, the kid sitting next to me plays with a model fighter plane, dipping a wing and circling over his mom’s shoulder into the enemy airspace above his seat tray. His cheeks puff out, lips pursed to make his machine guns go rat-a tat. I think of the fighter planes of the Great War that adorned the wallpaper in my childhood bedroom; how they wheeled and gunned through my mind’s clouded skies. Or reciting Flanders Fields at Remembrance Day assemblies in the 80s, the riot of poppies I pictured fluttering between rows of crosses in a distant field – like on the cover of Master of Puppets – boundless and not quite connected to this world.
