Artist's Insight:

Created as an illustration to accompany an interview with Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq for Ottawa BeatFound photos of the singer's hands frame a match box with circle motifs recalling the outline of drums; which I understand can be used as aides in ceremonies to help focus one's attention and clarify intentions. The burnt matches symbolize the past and current wrongs against Indigenous peoples, while the fresh match lies prepared to strike towards retribution.
