Sundial on Mars

Brendan de Montigny
From the Ruins series
Acrylic and gouache on panel
40 x 30 in. / 101.6 x 76.2 cm

Ruins is a series of low relief paintings depicting abstract topographies that represent alien worlds, Earth's ancient geography, and scorched futuristic vistas of neon remnants created by an unknown force.
They were created by a series of mediations where de Montigny's drawings and prior paintings were photographed and digitally manipulated, cut up, and overlaid to be then projected onto panels. This cyclical method served as the structural composition that informed the ebb and flow of paint, silicone, and plastic.
A number of works in this series contain 3D prints that were sculpted in virtual reality. Where traditional material begins and virtual reality was used was obscured on purpose.
