Seeking Possibility

Judy Nakagawa

Abaca paper pulp, tumeric, and wire
40 x 40 x 52 in. / 102 x 102 x 132 cm
2023

"As the pandemic came to an end, I felt it was time to shed older studio techniques and my emotional rut. While browsing in a Middle Eastern market, I found tubs of powdered turmeric. I wondered how I might use them to open up new ways of working. For this piece, I used the turmeric as an unfixed dye that I applied to cast abaca paper pods. Using stiff, steel wire I created a loose, spacious, open form that I like to think is inviting possibility." - Judy Nakagawa
